Javier Tebas explains how Barcelona can afford to sign Nico Williams from Athletic
La Liga president Javier Tebas believes Barcelona can afford to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club this summer. Williams is Barcelona's top target, and club president Joan Laporta has confirmed they have the funds available.
Tebas explained that if Barcelona returns to a 1:1 spending limit, meaning they stay within their salary cap, the signing is feasible. He pointed out that Barcelona has significantly reduced their wage bill by over €200 million and taken other financial measures, making it possible to bring in a player like Williams.
Williams has a €58 million release clause, and Tebas detailed that the cost would be amortized over the length of the player's contract. For a three-year deal, this would mean less than €20 million per year, plus the player's salary. Barcelona, with nearly €1 billion in turnover, can handle these figures if they adhere to the 1:1 rule. They aren't there yet, but they're close.
Barcelona is reportedly willing to offer Williams a five-year contract, structured similarly to the deal given to Robert Lewandowski when he joined from Bayern Munich.
